Graham, I emailed you my direct number. Let's talk more this week. I'll need to know a little more about the site and the similarity between the sides prior to providing a solid quote.

There are a number of options for high insulation value within a budget.

Also, thanks for the link to the article copying our article. Turns out there were two of our articles there. We're fine with people copying some of the information but we should be provided with a link back to the original article. I emailed him to fix it.

Hello,

I am interested in building an energy efficient duplex apartment building in Vermont. Each unit will be under 1000 sq ft and contain two bedrooms and 1.5 baths in two stories. It will be built on a slab. I want to be as efficient as possible but cost is the underlying issue. My two questions for you are: How much would you charge to design/consult on a project like this? and "Is it possible to build a super insulated structure without breaking the bank? Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Graham Mink

Erika,

I emailed you the answer, but I like to post it here too. Yes, it is definitely the right time to contact an architect. Unfortunately it is because I'm able to tell you that most of University Hills is zoned R-1 and there aren't any options for accessory dwelling units (ADU's) in R-1. There are many neighborhoods that do allow it and there might be some options for a design with one kitchen. Looking forward to speaking with you more and helping you find the right decision. Thanks.

Hi EV Studio Team,
My parents are moving to Denver following my recent re-location here, and we're interested in created a multi-generational setup in a mature neighborhood, specifically University Hills. Currently we're looking at homes. I have three questions:
1. Does the University Hills area allow for a carport to be converted into an attached, but separate living quarter, or would we need to share a kitchen?
2. At what stage in the game should we consult with an architect? It seems that an architect's input would be vital to home selection.
3. What is the range of funding we should be allotting for converting a 1.5 car carport into an independent living quarter (for a 1950's style home)?
Thanks so much for your input!

Ifthikhar, the answer is largely dependent on size, please let me know a little more. I also emailed you if that is an easier forum. Thanks,

I've a question its simple enough, but when dealing with architects you can never really tell. Joking I have spent time with two architectural firms I entered High School with the very high ideal of designing my own home. I was also a musician regrettably the draw the music business had was just to great. Okay my question is I have several projects I've been wrestling with and have even attempted obtaining Angel Investor)s). My ideas appears to be accepted one of them I pegged at around $50 million plus and gathered 3 Investors within 4 days. Okay ,okay I' sorry my question is would you be willing to provide drawings based on my info on what is referred to as on spec. What I propose is no different that preparing plans with 10 other firms who all of you are vying for the same project a reverse Tender so to speak.

Meena, I emailed you a more detail post but here is a response.

The main thing to know about shading close to the equator is that the sun will be at a relatively consistent angle as compared to those of us further from the equator. I'm sure your seasons are also relatively consistent. I don't know your exact location but I'm assuming that you'll want year round cooling and therefore designing the shading for the lowest sun angle will be appropriate to give you full shade throughout the year. Generally windows facing east are not major heat contributors so facing the views is probably a good option, though you'll want to make sure that there isn't significant thermal mass on the east to hold in the morning sun.
